My foray into contemporary Japanese fiction continues with this charming novel by Sosuke Natsukawa, about a young boy who inherits a secondhand bookshop from his grandfather and, with the help of a talking cat, begins a voyage of self-discovery. It has the same enchanting, magical lightness so many Japanese novels seem to possess, and is highly recommended.

has anyone read the complete Ring series by Koji Suzuki ? I finished the first book and loved it !! I'm wondering if it's worth continuing or if the first is the best ?

Oddly specific book recommendation request coming at you: from the 80s and 90s. I want to feel what I felt when I read Banana Yoshimoto for the first time.

I’ve already got the newly translated Izumi Suzuki collection on my list.

Delighted to find this: The Cat Who Saved Books by Sosuke Natsukawa. I am very keen on Japanese fiction, and, well, cats and books too, that goes without saying!

Any other fans of Japanese literature in the audience? The other day, I was reading the New York Review of Books and learned about the novels of Hiroko Oyamada: "The Factory," "The Hole," and her newest, "Weasels in the Attic." They're surreal commentaries on Japanese society, as far as I can tell. Has anyone read them? I need to buy them one of these days. After the holidays, perhaps.
