Never knew that there was a small group of Japanese Americans who were able to avoid (not escape) internment by appealing to the Govenor of Utah and live entirely free in Keetly Valley, UT about 40 miles east of Salt Lake City.

The irony of this is that many otherJapanese Americans were incarcerated behind barbed wire at the Topaz Relocation Center located near Delta City, UT about 130 miles south of Keetly Valley at the same time.

@StillIRise1963 I learned about it from neighbors who had been affected. Made a trip to Manzanar to learn more and teach our children. I’ve said it before, that trip was one of the most important moments in my life. I keep the picture of the entrance as my banner wherever I go.

Here’s this week’s #ShabbatReading #BookHaul from my local indie bookstore. I really liked Kiki Hughes’ other historical semi-non-fiction about the #JapaneseInternment , so I’m interested to read this collaboration.

Research for my #WIP took me into studying all of the Japanese Internment camps, and also American immigration policies regarding Japanese people from the 1920s onward.

That's a whole lot of #racism, xenophobia, Constitutional rights violations, and disgusting, inhuman cruelty.

At least now I know my character's grandparents would most likely have been interned at Topaz, and really couldn't have been Issei. But my mood is really not great.

This past June I had the humbling privilege to perform some digital archaeology fieldwork at the Amache Japanese-American Internment Camp in Grenada, Colorado. I'm very excited about the progress we've made so far and can't wait to share the galleries when our post-processing is complete.
