It'd be great if I could say these books were a special present I bought myself for my birthday, but that would be a lie. But it is true that I picked up 9月9日9時9分 because that's my birthday!
It does seems like a kind of bittersweet story though, so let's just hope a date is the only thing my birthday and this book share.

Got incredibly stressed out and did a somewhat irresponsible thing given the amount of books already waiting for me, but I've had my eye on three of these books for awhile now anyway, so I guess it's not all bad. And there's nothing wrong with supporting authors even if it'll be years before you read their work!
That being said, I think I need another bookshelf...

I just finished my first book in nearly two months, a brilliant short story collection by Erika Kobayashi (tr. Brian Bergstrom) called 'Sunrise: Radiant Stories.'
The works tackle issues surrounding nuclear power and its affects on people, especially women.
An especially timely read given the current situation at Fukushima Daiichi. Highly recommend.

A new (or rather, newly translated) short story by Hiromi Kawakami in the New Yorker.
From "Dragon Palace", a new collection of her short stories translated by Ted Goossen, out in September.

Anyway for some interesting and easily available in English looks at early 20th century Japan from the inside, I strongly recommend Yukio Mishima's _Sea of Fertility_ series, particularly _Spring Snow_ most in the general timeframe of this film.
(The second, _Runaway Horses_ is for me the best of the set though. And the one that follows is the least, but it does set up the final novel in the series which ... isn't as even-keeled a novel as _Runaway Horses_ but the ending that caps off the entire series is stunning.)

Starting my first 川上弘美 Hiromi Kawakami short story in Japanese, 鼴鼠 (called Mogera Wogura in English, although that's not a direct translation).
It's about 20 pages long, so I'll tell you what I think of it when I finish it in about a year 😁

I haven't finished most of the books I started in April, but it's time for another month of the #TranslatedLitChallenge! Not only that, but on my new e-reader!
The theme for May is fantasy and I'm honestly not sure if that's what this is, but it was on a list I found, so I just went with it.
