It starts out w/newsreel of the 60s violent student demonstration against the riot police, double exposed w/our protagonist getting his head bashed in. He flees but only to get into an argument w/ his older brother who is a cop. During the struggle, the brother gets shot by his subservient wife. The two flees to the North Country haunted by guilt. They become sullen lovers. Running in Madness, Dying in Love is ‘s protest against the rigid, conservative society.

"I had a lizard I kept in a Coca Cola bottle. I fed it and it grew. It got too big and I couldn't get it out of the bottle. After years of humiliation, do you have to guts to stand up for yourself, Japan?," Terayama was directly addressing young moviegoers in Japan in the late 60s early 70s, at the height of Vietnam War, when the US was using Japan as a one big military base. Playful & hard edged, Throw Away Your Books, Rally on the Streets is quite a show.

Terayama's take on the subjective nature of memories and time is a dazzling array of surrealistic whimsy. Pastoral takes place in a small mountain village and concentrates on core group of people. The film is full of contrasts : the villagers are stuck in the past, oblivious of the fast changing society elsewhere. Pastoral is a very Japanese film, a reflection of changing times still under the shadows of its war past. I loved its messy lyricism and playfulness.

As one of the boys faults his passivity for the death of their teacher who preferred bawdy songs of the working class rather than songs of nationalistic fervor, the film equates boys' pent up sexual desire to the political action. Further condemning and destroying the myth of the rise of Japanese Nationalism, it ends with the failed fantasy rape with the speech about Japan's first emperor being of Korean ancestry. Sing a Song of Sex has a real bite to it.

A human blowfish Hanada is a contract killer. Despite his quirks- he has a fetishistic tendency to the smell of cooking rice- he is damn good at his job. But when he fails an assassination job, hired by butterfly collecting femme fatale, he gets hounded by the invisible 'guild'.

This is a wild ride. Visually inventive, ultra modern sets & goofy humor, the Seijun Suzuki's gangster flick plays out like the adult, perverted combo version of Michel Gondry and WKW.

12. 'Funeral Parade of Roses' by Toshio Matsumoto. This is a brilliant film. Deals with Queers/Gays/counter culture in 60s Japan it's hard to define as its experimental at times. Kubrick loved this film and stole from it. Should be top 5. .

Confessions Among Actresses (1971) [also known as "Confession, Theory, Actress"]
Kiju Yoshida

"You're the actress KAIDO Akiko. A transparent cinematographical object, unable to resist or react. Confronted with such things, a man feels like suspended into the void, left on their own. KAIDO Akiko the woman, not the actress, becomes, inevitably, the object of cruel thoughts. All that ends in a stupid way."

Le Monde has reported the death of the great Japanese film maker Kiju Yoshida (Yoshishige Yoshida). My favourites are "Heroic Purgatory" (1970), "Eros+Massacre" (1969) and "Confessions among Actresses" (1971). Amazing works of intense formal rigor.
