Useless quote for 21 August:
"The only question is whether they [i.e., environmental problems] will become resolved in pleasant ways of our own choice, or in unpleasant ways not of our choice, such as warfare, genocide, starvation, disease epidemics, and collapses of societies."
~ Jared Diamond, 2005
Listening to the audiobook version of #JaredDiamond 's #TheWorldUntilYesterday , written 10 years ago. Wishing I had read this before my nearly 4 years of work in #PapuaNewGuinea. My outlook may have been different. #reflections #LifelongLearning

Last year I read Jared Diamond’s “Upheaval: how nations cope with crisis and change” (2019).
“How successful nations recover from crises while adopting selective changes … [revealing] factors influencing how both whole nations and individual people can respond to big challenges.”
A great frame for viewing subsequent challenges for Finland and USA (both chapters in the book) and for Ukraine.
#JaredDiamond has a tremendous book called #Collapse that leans into the idea that environmental wreckage is the graveyard of empires. Climate change is linked to conflict, and we can't fight our way off a dying planet. #Longterm #globalwarming increases fuel and food insecurity and if you don't think there's a market signal and solution to this, have you checked your grocery bill lately?

Donc, pas d'effondrement selon le scénario couramment rapporté.

@hhardy01 #EasterIsland. Did you by any chance listen to the *Fall of Civilizations* podcast episode about it? Very interesting. It turns out that the #JaredDiamond understanding of the island was wrong.
