El poderoso y elegante Buick Electra serpenteaba veloz la ruta 90 en la oscura y brumosa madrugada del 29 de junio de 1967. El destino era Nueva Orleans a orillas del acaudalado Mississippi. Allí, #JayneMansfield debía presentarse en un programa televisivo. Si bien estaba en baja, aún era una de las celebridades de la época. Había surgido a mediados de los 50´ y cumplía con todos los requisitos que una estrella cinematográfica requería: rubia platinada y físico exuberante. También eran habituales sus apariciones en la revista Playboy, otro signo de aquéllos años. Llegó a ser comparada con uno de los grandes íconos del siglo XX: Marilyn Monroe.
Un camino traicionero, una noche cerrada entre los pantanos y un camión a baja velocidad completaron un cóctel letal. La actriz, el chofer y su acompañante que viajaban en la parte delantera del vehículo fallecieron en el acto. Sus tres hijos, dormidos en la parte trasera, salvaron milagrosamente sus vidas (entre ellos Mariska Hargitay, protagonista de Law & Order: Special Victims Unit)
