Might be back on my #jazztotw bullshit? I've been rediscovering the enjoyment of simple accompaniment for pleasant melodies
I was poking around #bandcamp looking for recordings of "In a Shanty In Old Shanty Town" (it's this week's #jazztotw) and discovered the Sunset Serenaders' album "Hokum, Blues and Ballads" which is really nice. (If you dig R. Crumb's Cheap Suit Serenaders, you'll probably like this. It's not as raucous but it's got similar energy.)

Weekend was derailed a bit, so this is a day late, but:
The #jazztotw for 2021-01-24, chosen at random, is "In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town"
...and now I am led to wonder if transposing on the fly is a thing non-horn players are expected to do. (Eb concert pitch = F) It wouldn't be too hard to get used to with chords, melody would take a bit more work.

I'm back on my @magicians bullshit, thinking about trying to crank out an EP for the next #bandcampfriday without immediately completely derailing my personal #jazztotw challenge. I think I can do it if I don't stress about generating artifacts for the jazz stuff, which is fine.
I blame a friend who bought several copies of my recording of Auld Lang Syne to give as gifts, and said "You should totally do something that people could send as a Valentine" and as it happens there *is* a perfect no-brainer song I already know that I could dust off pretty quickly, one unreleased track that just needs mixing, and a couple of other songs I could dust off.
Two weeks to record and/or mix four tracks and make album art is an aggressive goal but my overall mood is a lot more optimistic than it's been in a long time, so 🤷♂️ :boucherbanjo: #projects #recording

I made a MIDI for the melody as well and, for the hell of it, pulled everything into #auriapro because the synths are generally a lot better. I sent the melody to the "MK I Clarinet" Mellotron voice in Streetlytron Pro and it's really pretty nice. No audio to share yet because Auria is still somewhat broken in #ios14, but I'll probably mess with it some more tomorrow.
I'm trying real hard not to yak-shave myself away from my intended focus of learning my instrument and building repertoire, but at the same time I find myself generating artifacts and collecting links and as I think about trying to promote the #jazztotw hashtag I'm like, "Wouldn't it be nice if I had a database for catalog songs and related metadata/files/links" :eyethink:
And then I remembered I *do* actually have something like that half-modeled and half-built already, the #django app I started building for managing content at https://arcanebanjo.com 😅
So, yeah, this is a thing I may tinker with #yakshaving
Here's a #MIDI backing track with cymbals and upright bass for "After You've Gone", this week's #jazztotw.
There's a count-off, followed by the chorus repeated three times.

And a couple of MP3s from the midi, at 90bpm and 126bpm:

As mentioned in a previous post, I've challenging myself to learn one new jazz standard per week for the next 60 weeks.*
This week's tune is "After You've Gone" by Henry Creamer & John T. Layton, written in 1918 and now in the #publicdomain.
In case anyone wants to play along, I'll try to be faithful about posting a new lead sheet every Sunday; I figure Saturday is a pretty good "due date" for many people who have the day off, and Sunday's a good day to start working on a new one for the same reason.
Until/Unless I can think of a snappy challenge name and hashtag, I'm going to call it Jazz Tune of the Week (#jazztotw.) The goal is to learn a tune well enough to record an audio or video clip of yourself playing it... whether that's singing, playing the melody, or vamping chords, or laying down a smooth bass line. You don't have to commit to grinding for 60 weeks if you don't want to, dropping in and out is fine.
Please boost! I'm going to do this myself regardless but the more the merrier.

*60 weeks because I'm working through an arbitrary "standards every jazz banjo player should know" list that has 60 songs on it
