@martinsettle What are some recent examples of Canadian ministers resigning in disgrace?
I remember #JeanCharest resigning from cabinet in 1990 because he had phoned a judge about a case. But surely there are more recent examples...
That was from #TashaKheiriddin who supported #JeanCharest . She predicts that #JustinTrudeau will have a hard fight against #PierrePoilievre .
"Note to Justin Trudeau: Poilievre’s team is vicious. Take early retirement, if you want to keep your sanity. But apparently the prime minister hasn’t got the memo. Instead, he has pledged to run again. And the Grits are girding for battle, pumping out attack ads."

@GettingCooked An offer he couldn't refuse...
This is trivial of course, but #JeanCharest was the guy who finally allowed margarine to be dyed yellow in Québec. Yes, that's the level of government meddling we had here, at the behest of the dairy lobby.
Butter *is* better than margarine, to be sure.
@GettingCooked #JeanCharest didn't want to go into provincial politics in any case, and always had to deal with mistrust. The former QC Liberal leader told him, "Jean, only you can keep Lucien Bouchard and the PQ from winning a majority. Take over from me." Mr. Charest realised that he was sunk federally if he became the guy who let the separatists win.

Stephen Harper endorses Poilievre as best chance for Conservatives to win next election

a) It's generally a mistake for former party leaders to involve themselves in current leadership contests, especially by public statements. They are better off as symbols of unity.
b) Seems like #StephenHarper really dislikes #JeanCharest . I wonder why?

Does "acknowledging reality" really amount to "grabbing the third rail of politics"? Well, still a good idea.
The article claims #PierrePoilievre is traficking in slogans, while #JeanCharest is offering meaningful policy. Could be. I guess I should be paying more attention to the races.

"In more years now of watching Canadian politics than I care to admit to, I’ve been surprised by three courageous policy initiatives, each introduced by a politician who was not especially ideological: Brian Mulroney going for free trade with the U.S., Paul Martin’s expenditure-slashing 1995 budget, and Jean Charest’s decision a decade ago to raise university tuition."

On #JeanCharest 's work for #Huawei :
"Poilievre scoffed: “Huawei paid you to free the two Michaels? Come on — do you have some swamp land to sell in Florida too?” Yet, when I asked Kovrig’s former wife and the primary advocate for his release, Vina Nadjibulla, she said Charest was indeed in contact with her. “I am grateful for Mr. Charest’s efforts to find a resolution to Meng Wanzhou’s extradition case and for his solidarity for my advocacy of Michael’s release,” she said."
On #JeanCharest :
"As far as his time as leader of the Quebec Liberal Party between 2003 and 2012 is concerned, he said he is proud of his fiscal record. [...] “You know what the story was? Fiscal discipline,” he said. “When we left office, we left one of the best economies in the country in terms of jobs, the fiscal situation and a higher credit rating in Quebec than Ontario. There’s a reason for that — good management.” The facts bear him out."

@fssofdeath Then a strange twist of fate: his ambitions had always been federal, he was accomplishing something there; but against his will he was forced into provincial politics.
Which he succeeded at, more or less, limiting the PQ's power and forestalling another referendum, this time led by #LucienBouchard .
I've always had time for #JeanCharest , though I know he doesn't share all my political views.

@fssofdeath Maybe you don't remember 1993, when the old PC party collapsed, and the leadership fell into the hands of #JeanCharest . For years he criss-crossed the country, trying to rebuild the party, to find money and good candidates. He was rewarded by increasing the number of MPs tenfold.
Then the referendum campaign, in which he was the leading "No" campaigner, waving his passport and saying he was proud of his Canadian citizenship.
"Charest said he would scrap the Liberals’ carbon tax for consumers, but would make industrial emitters pay their share. He would go back to former prime minister Stephen Harper’s targets for 2030, all while promising to achieve Canada’s net-zero targets by 2050."
This is disappointing.

"Probably the most consequential endorsement of the last week was former Ontario premier Mike Harris endorsing Charest. In a race where Charest is facing near-daily accusations that he isn’t a “real” conservative, it’s a coup to get a thumbs-up from Harris, the rare example of a Canadian conservative who actually did conservative things while in government like lowering taxes and slashing spending."
