Mysterious buildings in Scotland

I pass this ‘house' on a regular basis, although normally in the car - its not a section of road we frequently cycle but cycling over to Jedburgh I stopped yesterday. At a distance it is a wee cottage on the side of a moderately busy road. Get closer and it is a facade - a small barn that has been ‘enhanced’ to make it look a little more interesting. The lilac in the field looks as though harvesting is imminent.

The majestic and amazingly complete remains of the abbey church at Jedburgh Abbey in the Scottish Borders. It was founded in 1138 and developed over several centuries, despite repeatedly falling victim to cross-border conflict. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/jed

Jedburgh began as Jedworð, the "worth" or enclosed settlement on the Jed. Later the more familiar word "burgh" was substituted for this, though the original name survives as Jeddart/Jethart.

The Scots name for the town is part of the expression "Jeddart justice" or "Jethart Justice", in which a man was hanged first, and tried afterwards.

Jedburgh (/ˈdʒɛdbərə/; Scottish Gaelic: Deadard; is a town and former royal burgh in the Scottish Borders and the traditional county town of the historic county of Roxburghshire, the name of which was randomly chosen for Operation Jedburgh in support of the D-Day invasion.

US special ops paratroopers get ready for their flight to northern France on the night before D-Day. Specially trained, they would land behind enemy lines to secure the initial beachhead, disrupt communications/rail lines and connect up with partisans.
