Jeff Speck's updated book Walkable Cities is out now, and the excerpts published in Bloomberg are required reading. I especially endorse the section at the end about culpable traffic engineers, who deserve a significant share of the blame for creating dangerous environments AND preventing them from being improved and made safer.

"In most cities, and in most of our nation, the car is no longer an instrument of freedom, but rather a bulky, expensive, and dangerous prosthetic device, a prerequisite to viable citizenship." #JeffSpeck #WalkableCity
"The profession of civil engineering as it pertains to design of roadways is criminally negligent. It demands a giant class action lawsuit... be brought to their knees over the tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths every year they cause due to their “standards."" – #JeffSpeck
What the Last Decade Has Done for the #Walkability #Movement
In 2012, #JeffSpeck’s #WalkableCity sparked a conversation about why #pedestrianized #places matter and became one of the best-selling #books about the #built #environment in recent memory. Ten years later, though, so much about the world has changed — even as #humanCentered #communities have become more important than ever.
