Hanna Song of @twtNKDB said during the #Jeju Forum that fewer North Koreans are escaping to South Korea amid the COVID-19 pandemic, limiting their knowledge of what is occurring inside the country.

"Many experts are calling this the new dark ages," she said.

During the height of the NK famine, 2,000 escapees a year made it south.

“Just because we hear little about what is happening in North Korea, it doesn't mean nothing is happening,” she said.

Divide and conquer much? Woo Chang-beom, vice chairman of the committee promoting the building of a second airport on #Jeju, an island of only 1,833.2 sqm (707.8 sq mi), tries to woo residents on the western side of the island by saying they'll be able to use the existing airport more conveniently if a second one is built on the eastern side, nicely sidestepping the environmental impact on the entire island.

Today In Labor History April 3, 1948: Cheju Massacre in Korea. Between 1948 and 1949, one of the 20th century’s least known genocides occurred. On the island of Cheju-do, 30,000 civilians were massacred (10% of the island’s population) by the South Korean army, Cheju-do police and the U.S. military. However, the governor of Cheju told American intelligence that the real number was closer to 60,000. Another 30,000 people fled to Japan. The massacre was designed to suppress a worker uprising and General Strike.

Eighty banners claiming #Jeju 4.3 was ordered by late North Korean leader Kim Il-sung and the communist party have been erected on the island ahead of the 75th anniversary of the massacre.

Of the two I’ve seen today, both were slashed.

One I had seen this morning was whole when I passed.

By the afternoon, it was in shreds, and police were on the scene.

"Jiseul" by Muel O. (2012) is set in 1948 South Korea. It depicts the Jeju massacre in which over 10,000 people lost their lives. Shot in incredible black-and-white and with a patience that is unusual for such films, Muel O. has created a cinematic monument to the dead.

This year marks several grim anniversaries on #Jeju in particular the 75th anniversary of the Jeju Massacre.

It also marks the 45th anniversary of "Suni Samchon," a short story that would crack open decades of silence surrounding the massacre.
