One of my latest efforts 😏 I got the idea from a friend Gabe who made a map of Russian Empire #klezmer stuff from the An-Sky expedition, so playing around with Felt (a new mapping site someone on here suggested) I came up with this map of the birthplaces of American klezmer recording artists of the golden age and what place names they used in their recordings.

my latest blog post that I've been working on for the last few weeks about I.J.Hochman, a Podolia-born 1910s-20s New York #klezmer recording artist about whom very little is known.
I was hoping to be able to connect with one of his many descendants but I couldn't figure out how. Maybe one of them will see it eventually and get in touch😁 ya never know, maybe someone has a photo or music manuscript or knows more backstory.

The #Yiddish singer Andrea Pancur has passed away unexpectedly. I never met her but she was a friend of many friends and an award winning artist in many ways. #RIP Look up her excellent Yiddish and #klezmer albums sometime including Alpenklezmer and other unique projects.

Certainly a niche scholarly topic about #klezmer but the Klezmer Institute put up a page about the project I've been working on a bit this year. It's still basically in the exploratory stage but it's aiming to develop an informed framework to try and publish some of the #JewishMusic found in the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine.

Very cool, the Klezmer Institute got another grand from the US National Endowment for the Humanities to allow them to continue working into the next phase of their Klezmer Archive project.

I saw demos of this proposed archive last year, it will be quite like anything else. Essentially a kind of repository of user-contributed knowledge and documents about musical pieces, with branching connections between people and music.

In honour of #Blaugust (lol), I've decided to start a new blog focusing on #klezmer research that is a bit too niche for Wikipedia. Here's my first post, which I reworked from a draft article I wrote a few months ago when I was first looking over the klezmer materials listed in US copyright ledgers.
It's been a decade or more since I had any kind of blog, so let me know if I'm missing something in terms of norms, accessibility or formatting.

Her handful of albums are on most streaming services if you want to give them a listen. She dug up some lesser known #Yiddish chestnuts and did quite well with them

There are plenty of good-quality live videos of Gendler on youtube; but I think listening to the 2011 album of his original songs with arrangements by Christian Dawid is the best way to get a feeling for his sound:

My latest #Wikipedia biography, by request of some longtime friends of his.
Arkady Gendler (1921-2017, Avram Hendler in Yiddish) was a Romanian-born chemist who spent most of his life in Zaporozhzhia, #Ukraine; a lover of #Yiddish songs, he collected them throughout the Soviet period and in the 90s became internationally known as a singer and living link to the prewar world of music and Yiddish culture.
feedback or corrections welcome.

According to someone on the Jewish Music Mailing List, Bob Berkman has passed away. I never met him, but I've appreciated his work for years from afar, his dedication to researching, popularizing and performing old #JewishMusic and #Klezmer piano rolls.

Dan Blacksberg's "Radiant Others" #klezmer and #yiddish music podcast put out their latest episode interviewing Ilya Shneyveys, a Latvia-born #accordionist and multi-instrumentalist currently living in NYC. One of the most hard-working accompanists in the genre and someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of old tunes and how they are related to each other.

A #klezmer tune I've been listening on repeat the last few days which is a lot of fun is this (mostly) major key fast bulgar with a distinctly #Romanian feel by Harry Beckerman's "Metronome" orchestra.
Love the whimsy and especially the crescendo building up before the A section repeats. Haven't heard this tune played by any klezmer revivalists yet.

By comparison, Brandwein recorded the piece again in 1924 (mid-lawsuit, I think), and the harmonization is much more normal. It's this version that made it onto a reissue CD and which I heard for years before hearing the 1923 recording.
In the lawsuit it was claimed by Columbia Records that this melody was widely known in Southeastern Europe, but so far I haven't heard any version preceding these two...

Salute to Abigale Reisman from Boston, in my opinion one of the best of the younger generation of #klezmer violinists 😏 🎻 Here recreating a 115 year old recording by Oscar Zehngut, an Austro-Hungarian violinist who was also active in the Yiddish Theatre and variety shows in Lviv

I was invited to join a small reading group that will discuss this excellent book Klezmer: Music, History, and Memory (2016) by Walter Zev Feldman. The first one is this afternoon so I'm re-reading the intro.
It's one of the only book-length, rigorously researched English-language works about #klezmer music. Although there is room for disagreement with some of its conclusions it's stil definitely an essential work.
