MOMA ignored/erased Oppenheim’s Jewish identity almost farcically in that (great and revelatory) retrospective.

It didn’t harm the art, it was just another instructive #JewsDontCount example which obscured something extremely basic about her life and work.

Something similar in the current Guggenheim Gego show. She wasn’t only “fleeing Nazi persecution” she was a Jew.

Like, 1 explanatory placard in each show would have fixed this.

Dara Horn makes an excellent point in this documentary. The whole discussion around representation, diversity, and equity centers around the idea that minority groups face power imbalances, but the premise of antisemitism is that Jews have too much power, so they are often excluded from the discussion.

This constant push-back from admins is, in my view, a secondary form of hate.

Also, it's okay for there to be disagreement on what constitutes hate speech, especially when it's subtle, but my experience is (as the book title says) #JewsDontCount

This is such an important point. I think Jews understand this because it effects us so directly, where people categorize Jews as white because many North American Jews are economically successful, as if that erases Jew hate.

And I see it with East Asians in North America. Education and financial wealth of a portion of a population do not erase or counter racism either at a micro or macro level.

It would be great if all the instances protected #Jews, but the fact is that on the Fediverse, Jews are subject to the same kind of hate and harassment that we often receive on traditional large social media.

I complain to instances when #antisemitism comes up, and sometimes it's addressed, and other times, it isn't, because, sadly #JewsDontCount in the eyes of many (even well intentioned) instance operators.

So I did start a new instance, for this marginalized community.

One time I was part of a group covered on a #left #progressive documentary TV show and the footage edited out anything about me being #Jewish so I could very cleanly be portrayed as an #antifascist redneck.

Why? Because there was already an #antifa #Jew on the episode. I think about how weird that is every once in while.

Today it popped into my brain when someone posted trashing #JewsDontCount by #DavidBaddiel.

I haven’t watched or read #JewsDontCount so I cannot necessarily comment on it specifically, but I will say that you cannot look at #antisemitism in isolation from other kinds of bigotry.

Making this all into some kind of “oppression olympics” isn’t helpful. Listening to a variety of minority voices talk about their oppression & attempting to analyse one’s own privileges, is.
