Outside of Jewish media, the relative erasure of the fact that Oppenheimer and Strauss were Jewish and why this mattered in the early 1940s (FFS) is seriously disturbing.

And yes, this does include the fact that neither of the actors playing Oppenheimer or Strauss are Jewish.

TIL about the concept of "cooperative overlapping" in speech, a pattern typical of many Jewish (as well as other) communities, and by extension places with large Jewish communities like NYC.

It goes a really long way to explain why a we often have to unlearn a way of speaking that comes naturally to us if we want to avoid appearing rude in new cultural contexts.

I'll be honest, Mrs. Maisel has had its ups and downs for me, although enough ups to keep me hooked throughout the seasons.

While the last season had its issues (for a start, couldn't Ethan's Israeli wife be played by someone whose Hebrew isn't so American?!?) - I loved that final scene of Midge and Susie watching Jeopardy together. And I loved getting an actual ending to the series.

Many years ago, my grandma Sarah (z"l) gave each of her four granddaughters a silver hannukia with a personal engraving. My sisters and I have been lighting them every year since, taking them with us wherever we live.

Last year my parents decided to continue the tradition by buying each of their six grandsons (yes, we're a family of girls who all had only boys) their own engraved hannukia.

Tonight will be the first night we're lightning both together.
