This is part of my story from my blog, Walking in Sober Boots, written early in my recovery. I am so grateful that I don’t live like that anymore.

“I couldn’t drink enough to pass out before the intense feelings of self loathing crept in. Many nights, despite my best efforts to numb the world out and pass out, I had to give up that goal and simply go to bed because I was too depressed.”

I am remembering a Christmas Eve phone conversation with my friend John in 2019. John had been in and out of for years. He sounded good for a change. He sounded like he did before the booze and drugs. He told me that he was working with a sponsor and that life was getting better for him. He hadn’t taken a drink or used a drug in months.

I was happy for him. We wished each other a Merry Christmas.

Fourteen days later I got the call that John was dead.

Overdose.

A lot can happen in 14 days. Addiction is insidious.

Stay vigilant. Stay sober. Stay alive.

The next week can be really difficult for lots of folks, especially people in and . There are a lot of triggers for a lot of people.

Be gentle with yourself. Be gentle with your friends and family.

As for what you need.

Set boundaries. Observe boundaries.

Let’s get through it and live to see another day. One day at a time.
