One of the most impressive sentences that I've read was crafted by Joan Didion for her 1966 essay “Some Dreamers of the Golden Dream”.

Some expressions in the sentence show its age, but the build from the banal topics of the opening phrases is so good that the sentence is a short story and character study in itself.

I'm rereading Joan Didion's collection of essays, The White Album, for the first time in decades. Dredges up memories of how it felt in the late 60s/early 70s, an inkling of the energy during my youth that doubtless shaped me. No film about the period stirs up so much. The power of books. I have this strange whim to buy some really nice bath soap. Something old-fashioned, where it's a decent size, the scent lasts through the whole bar, and it creates really gorgeous lather. It's surprisingly difficult to find. Preferably #lavender, although there are some other scents that would be nice, too. I remember reading about #JoanDidion and her fondness for gardenia scented bath soap from a department store in California that is now closed. #bathsoap #LittleLuxuries

Finished rereading "Dawn" by Octavia Butler. That story makes my skin crawl with the heavy overtones of colonization, psychological manipulation and forced sympathy for the captors. Yet, it's such a crítical piece of work for discussing topics of agency and survival.

Needed to pivot to something lighter. Am now reading "The Year of Magical Thinking" by Joan Didion.
