in 1967, trailblazing astrophysicist helped shape our understanding of the universe by providing the first direct evidence of pulsars, aka rotating neutron stars, marking one of the most significant scientific achievements of the 20th century.

@mcnees An amazing tale of one tenacious women’s scientific discovery (and of the mansplainers who went on to take the credit!)

As an erstwhile student of physics, I was lucky enough to meet Jocelyn at an Athena SWAN lecture a few years ago (she was one of the founders of the initiative)

Jocelyn Bell Burnell transformed astronomy in 1967 when she made the first observation of a pulsar.

She and advisor Antony Hewish initially dubbed the object LGM-1 (“Little Green Men”) for its regular signal, but soon identified it as a rotating, magnetized neutron star.

Due to their precision, pulsars could act as navigational beacons for interstellar travel.

Because graduate student contributions to discoveries were not recognised at the time, Jocelyn's male PhD supervisor was awarded the Nobel Prize for discovering pulsars in 1974, considered one of the most important astronomical discoveries of the 20th century. (2/2)
