A full #JodrellBank turn-out today to celebrate the #100thBirthday of our former Director and #AstronomerRoyal, Professor Sir Francis Graham-Smith. Wonderful anecdotes and science recollections from former Jodrell Bank Director, Andrew Lyne, #SKA Director General, Phil Diamond, current Astronomer Royal, Martin Rees and Director of the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, Michael Kramer. Graham himself was in fine form and made only one "simple" request: find out #pulsars work! #Happy100

Great to be out at #JodrellBank this afternoon to record for the #BBCWorldService #CrowdScience programme with presenter Marnie Chesterton and producer Phil Sansom. The weather played ball, so we were able to record outside. However, the #woodpeckers were determined to be heard! The program, on the #DrakeEquation and the possibility of life elsewhere in the #Galaxy, should appear in mid April on the BBC World Service and on BBC Sounds.

Took the boys for a late evening to #JodrellBank for their family stargazing event. Well worth the trip, the boys had a great time and even came home with a little piece of meteor each, thanks to a generous man from Macclesfield Astronomical Society !

It has been great catching up with friends and colleagues in Cheshire, at #JodrellBank and the #SKAO. My first work related trip abroad since 2019.

It may be six months away, but I'm very excited to be on the bill for #Bluedot at #JodrellBank in July. It really is the most extraordinary festival with plenty of astro goodness and music #Astrodon

Astonishing visit to #JodrellBank yesterday, where the new visitors’ centre is breathtaking, including digital projections onto pieces of the original #telescope surface. Completely worth a visit - & the Lovell itself was glorious in the winter twilight.

Interesting Jodrell Bank fact. The main satellite at Jodrell Bank was used to track Russian launches during the space race. Russia eventually clocked onto this and didn’t shut it down but quite the opposite, they asked for the data! Lovell somehow managed to maintain a relationship between the US and Russia during sensitive times. He was at one point even invited to Russia and invited to defect, he went to Russia but turned down the defection offer! #russia #space #spacerace #jodrellbank #facts

In 1966, USSR's Luna 9 probe sent the first photos ever taken from the surface of the #moon. British #radioAstronomers at #JodrellBank were listening to Luna's transmissions when they recognized the fax-like sounds. Using equipment borrowed from a local newspaper, they were able to not only decode the pictures, but published them before the Soviets did!

I made an #introduction a couple of weeks ago, but there are more people around now, so here's an introduction to my #research.
I have mainly worked on #RadioAstronomy surveys of neutral hydrogen in the local universe. In my early career, I was part of the HIPASS survey with the #Parkes telescope and the HIJASS survey with the #Lovell telescope at #JodrellBank, and did my #PhD on the HIDEEP survey, also with Parkes. I later led the AGES and WAVES surveys with #Arecibo.

A more technical #introduction for #Astrodon folk. I'm a senior lecturer in #physics and #astronomy at the #university of #Manchester, based at #jodrellbank. I work on the detection of cool #exoplanets using #microlensing. I also lead a #transmission #spectroscopy survey of exoplanet #atmospheres called SPEARNET. Additionally, I've used ideas from #gametheory to develop smart #SETI strategies. Currently deputy lead of #ESA @ec_euclid exoplanet science working group. Lead from next March.
