Further to the passing of #JohnBird this week. The best episode of #AbsolutePower... https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6u3mk3
The passing of #JohnBird this week has me revisiting his show #AbsolutePower, in which he played one of the principals of the most amoral PR agency to ever exist. (Stephen Fry played the other.) Incredible comedy. Here's a clip where they discover their über-rich new clients are literal Nazis, which is only enhanced by knowing some of Fry's family history....
'George Parr' genially admitted to his shortcomings precisely because the journalist was himself a product of the same background and education, and so 'George Parr' was chatting to the journalist as if to a friend at his club and not to an adversary.
Having Bird and Fortune switch off playing 'George Parr' and the journalist also pointed out the coziness with which many journalists treat individuals in authority. The interviews truly displayed what privilege is all about.
A belated remembrance of satirist John Bird, who passed away Christmas Eve at age 86.
The mock journalist interviews carried on by Bird and John Fortune — in which they alternated from interview to interview, with one playing the journalist and the other 'George Parr', who could be a banker, military man, civil servant or MP — were brilliant send-ups of privilege. 'George Parr' was incompetent, but he clearly got his position because of how he looked and how he spoke....

Think you can see #JohnBird on the left, me on right. BBC Shakespeare’s season, Taming of the Shrew directed by Johnathan Miller 1980

RIP John Bird, a.k.a. George Parr. Bird was incredibly funny, intellectual and anti-establishment. Who could ask for anything more? #johnbird

#JohnBird died.
He was a master of understated #satire.
I think there's a joke to be made about how the #Tory government killed satire in 2022, but I'm too bummed out to formulate it.

Ohhh, #RIP John Bird, 86, totally brilliant satirist. John Bird & John Fortune together perfectly portrayed, in the 90s and noughties, the absurdity and self-important, pompous fatuousness of so many white male businessmen, management consultants and of course government ministers

“Lord knows, satire has missed them this last decade and now that loss is permanent,”
Too true. Such a loss.

If you do one thing today, watch one of his interview sketches with John Fortune and ask yourself if it’s ever been more beautifully done. RIP George Parr. 💔2/4

RIP John Bird. Haven't watched any of these sketches for years, and they're so tinged with sadness now. The horror of prescient comedy eh!
