Considering a re-read of "The Translator" by #JohnCrowley. Brilliant characterization of a platonic spring/autumn friendship. A Soviet emigre mentors an American college student at the start of the Viet Nam war. The girl struggles with her transition to adulthood. The man is torn between a desire to nurture her potential and recognition that his status as a dissident puts his friends at risk. I think it's a book that could only be written by an older author, one well aware of mortality.

The story of this book's publication is incredible, like a literary fable about the impossibility of publishing the perfect edition. I ordered my copy in my twenties and it's finally being delivered... well, after one last delay!
