John groeit op in Queens waar hij rockmuziek met de paplepel ingegoten krijgt, maar krijgt wel een strenge opvoeding met een autoritaire vader.
Als tiener speelt hij in zijn eerste bandje met #TamásErdélyi later gekend als #TommyRamone, the Tangerine Puppets, waarmee ze songs van #TheStooges coveren.
In 1974 ontmoet hij #DouglasColvin, later #DeedeeRamamone.
