David Chandler/LSE on putting #JohnRawls' ideas at the centre of Labour party thinking:

'True economic justice will require a more fundamental reshaping of our economy, tackling inequality at its source, replacing our harsh & punitive benefits system with something like an unconditional basic income, and instituting new models of democracy at work'.

I'd agree, there's much to like in Rawls' central idea of policies based on the assumption of the 'veil of ignorance'!

In 'A Theory of Justice', Rawls writes that 'justice as fairness' "prevents the use of natural endowment and the contingencies of social circumstance as counters in a quest for political and economic advantage ...".

Social contingencies are easy to pick out - generational wealth, for example - natural endowment less so. The point is everyone regardless of socioeconomic position or ability is on equal footing with an Elon Musk, and that hoarding wealth prevents just that.

He spends the next chapters on why this isn't utilitarianism, and how to justify redistributive wealth. An easy way of seeing this is that determinations made behind his famous 'veil of ignorance' take into account why I, say, who has a debilitating mental illness, is entitled to a life as full and equal as that of others. Because when the veil is lifted, you better believe you want to be on the side that is fair and just.

Another way of seeing this is simply to open your eyes. Most of us here have done that. Some haven't. Enough don't care.

Wonderful episode of “In Our Time” discussing John Rawls’ “A Theory of Justice”. The original position/veil of ignorance is such an incredibly elegant thought experiment. Sticking around for the extra bit is also worth it IMO.
