“When he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?” Jesus answered them, “I also will ask you one question, which if you tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from men?” They reasoned with themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the multitude, for all hold John as a prophet.” They answered Jesus, and said, “We don’t know.” He also said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first, and said, ‘Son, go work today in my vineyard.’ He answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind, and went. He came to the second, and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I’m going, sir,’ but he didn’t go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said to him, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Most certainly I tell you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering into God’s Kingdom before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him; but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. When you saw it, you didn’t even repent afterward, that you might believe him.”

This is an interesting verse:

John 5:6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

If he was sent from God, does that mean John that Baptist existed before he was born?

What wakes you up
Synoptic Gospels - not John

What’s our wake up call?   What are you like when the alarm goes off? Is it immediately jumping out of bed, and if you are of an age, a quick trip to the toilet? Perhaps you need that jolt of coffee to quick start your day? You may be a reflective person who slowly wakes up, chewing over the news of yesterday as you eat your shredded wheat

@thissorryspacesuit @snarkology -- "This engraving has lost a bit of the subtlety of the painting." That's a very friendly way to describe that reproduction ;-).

Sorry, as for such reproductions, I don't have more examples. I found that engraving during my Snark hunt:

“So, who was John the Baptist? ... He is, in a way, all of us; called to start the work, to speak out against corruption, to call for repentance, without necessarily getting to see the end of what we’ve begun, or even to understand how God is working in our lives, having to hope and trust in Him by faith.”

Hearing Matthew’s Nativity story on the 4th Sunday of ( Year A) seems premature. BCP has John 1.19-28, the testimony of which seems preferable. We’re not singing carols yet at today’s Sunday Eucharist - or are we?

Two new articles in

this week:

1. The Perfect Law of Liberty on Poverty and Wealth: A Precursor to Paul? – Craig Blomberg. He argues that whilst some scholars pit James against Paul regarding poverty and wealth, they demonstrate striking similarities; James’s teaching could plausibly even be a source for Paul’s commitments in this area.

2. John’s as a Symbolic Enactment of the Return from – Joel White (Professor of New Testament; Freie Theologische Hochschule Gießen). Joel argues that John’s baptism in the Jordan was innovative, rather than reflecting pre-existing rituals, and that he intended it as a symbolic depiction of return from exile.

John the Baptist (d. c. 30 CE) was a 1st-century CE itinerant preacher in Judea. We do not know his full name, but he is recognized by his activity. 'Baptizer' (Greek: baptizo) was translated directly into English and meant 'to immerse' or 'plunge'. John immersed people in the river Jordan after they had repented of their sins. Next to Jesus of Nazareth and Paul the Apostle, John the Baptist is...worldhistory.org/John_the_Bapt

I did, yeah, I created you
My, I thought Advent was all about Jesus? Last week we may have heard about John the Baptist. Well given that the birth of Jesus was only in 2 of the four Gospels, and not in the earliest of Gospels, good news: John the Baptist is in all four Gospels…
