Edward Synge (1659-1741); bishop of Tuam, writer of a reply to Toland's Christianity Not Mysterious, preacher of toleration, was born in Inishannon, Co Cork in 1659.

He hired both and (at different times) to write propaganda for him. Toland broke with Oxford over the Peace of Utrecht, with the final rupture marked by "The Art of Restoring" (1714) which hinted at Oxford's involvement in a conspiracy to put James III on the throne. He was also depicted in this satire of the divisions within the Established Church associated with "Milton's works". @Irishphilosophy I have just discovered that Thomas Aikenhead, the last person in the U.K. to be executed for blasphemy, was an ‘avid reader’ who had allegedly read Toland’s Christianity Not Mysterious. His indictment is quite the read.
