A conversation elsewhere reminded me of a cassette I was given by a Finnish friend I stayed with while Interrailing in 1992. I'd taken a #cassette player but very few tapes; she did me a C90 with the newly released 'Nevermind' on one side, and this on the other...

It's #RinneRadio #Joik, a combination of electronica, jazz and Sami 'Joik' folk singing. Might be a stretch to say it would be what #Gong might sound like if they'd formed in #Finland in the late eighties...

This is Daniel's #Joik by Jon Henrik Pfällgren. He was born in #Colombia 🇨🇴 but was adopted at a young age by a #Sámi family in #Sweden 🇸🇪. Although he was bullied during childhood for being darker skinned, he embraced the local culture and traditions, including reindeer herding and joik. Joiking someone/something is an impressionist form of #music using syllables to evoke or revive their essence. This #song is dedicated to his friend, Daniel, who died of diabetes.
