Ooh, really enjoyed that! Felt much more ‘there’ being on Zoom. Could add things to the chat etc. and talked a little with some members afterwards.

There was a talk on inclusion (disability, gender & sexuality etc.) that was good.

I feel I’ve definitely chosen the right synagogue/community after such a long search.

I have reached the inevitable point in my #Jewish studies where I ask the question, “How did God allow the #Shoah?”, and remarkably after reading and thinking, I am satisfied.

I believe that every (religious) individual will come to their own conclusion, but if that conclusion is ‘divine punishment’ (theodicy) then I suggest more reading, more thinking, more study.

And the ‘314th mitzvah’ (look it up) includes converts to #Judaism

Quick update.

Possible options have indeed appeared in Singapore (would need to wait till Autumn) and hoping to arrange a Zoom call with Australia. Just sorting out reference letters now.

Once I have a sponsoring rabbi I plan on journaling my path on a website (as long as the rabbi is OK with that).

Well I read through the #Amidah just following the #Hebrew. I occasionally looked at the transliteration to check I wasn’t totally wrong.

It took FOREVER so I hope HaShem is filled with patience… Do the rabbis of the Talmud ever say it’s possible to cause HaShem to fall asleep? 😅

Still, impressed with my progress. No way I could have done that a couple of months ago.

When you convert to #Judaism you choose a #Hebrew name. I know there are restrictions if Ashkenazi about choosing a living relative’s name etc but is anything else fair game? Can you choose the name of a prophet for example?

So the synagogue where I’d like to join a conversion program requires two reference letters (in addition to other security check stuff, which is normal of course). But I don’t work anymore so I can’t ask my employer…

I had a reply from a rabbi about distance conversion! The program doesn’t start till October and I guess I’d need to fly to Singapore but this is progress after all!

Due to a bunch of unrelated things I’ve had a day where I’ve felt very low and of course hearing the rejection from the New Zealand synagogue, where I’ve really been enjoying the services and finding them spiritually moving, knocked me down quite a bit.

I am open to any suggestions. It may be the case that I just have to wait and see if Tokyo’s rabbi is replaced at some year in the future…
