I have some issues with this article, which reuses the tired & inaccurate framing of #Indonesia "moving" the capital from #Jakarta to #Nusantara while trying to pigeonhole a climate argument into what is a political decision.

Curiously, it includes several grafs praising Jokowi, seemingly lifted from his campaign bio, but this line in particular surprised me.

"Raised in a riverside slum in a smaller city...Mr. Joko..."

At the conference on pandemic response transition this morning, President Jokowi said that prior to the pandemic he hadn’t seen the level of collaboration and cooperation across government agencies and offices that they sprung into to manage the pandemic response in the country. “Obviously we needed to be under pressure to work together like that”, he said.

The President admitted, “I spent three days meditating to decide if we needed a lockdown”

“This is a transition period so we still need to be vigilant,” he said, reminding the audience that while the conditions have greatly improved, the threat of the virus remains.

According to the President the economy is in a very good shape and the country is expected to meet the year on year growth target set by Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Airlangga Hartarto.

President Jokowi hinted that the PPKM or mobility restrictions may go away at the end of this year.

"Our daily cases stand at 1,200, and maybe at the end of the year we will declare an end to our PSBB, PPKM”,
President Jokowi said at the 2023 Indonesian Economic Outlook conference, today.

Covid-19 has not disappeared but the government seems ready to leave the pandemic behind and return to normalcy based on the declining figures over the past two months.

According to the Indonesian Health Ministry, since the first local case of Covid-19 was officially announced in March 2020, we’ve had 6.7 million cases, 160,000+ deaths, 174.6 million fully vaccinated, and 68 million boosted.

Our weekly case numbers have dropped from just under 30,000 two Sundays ago to 10,000 last Sunday while deaths dropped from 302 to 174 during the same period.

These are not the lowest this year by far but the government seems to consider them manageable and local pharmaceutical company BioFarma has committed to producing enough vaccines for next year.

Most of the country have been on PPKM level 1, the lowest level with mandatory check ins and optional masking outdoors, but those requirements haven't been fully observed for some time even in the capital city.

While an official announcement remains to be seen, it's almost a foregone conclusion that all pandemic restrictions will be removed come January 2023 given the President's statement earlier today.
