@unascribed hi Una! I just learnt about #Jortage thanks to this post which was boosted.
I suggest you add the link to the website of the project in such toots, so people like me have an easier time getting to know what it’s about. 🙂
@haubles That’s amazing! So cool. Awesome job #jortage and the #FastForward team at #Fastly!
jortage is a communal cloud designed for #fediverse instances.
Content duplication across instances is an expected behavior, but it can mean high costs for admins. Jortage helps solve this by deduplicating content for members. Their #storage pool is currently storing 13.40TiB across 60.35 million objects — without deduplication, it would be storing 27.02TiB across 123.37 million objects.
Today, we welcome #jortage to #FastForward ⏩

I know for many #mastoadmin ’s keeping a continuous growing media cache is not possible.
But I also feel like downloading gigs every day only to trash them again while most likely only really consuming 20% of it is neither economic nor environment friendly.
I feel like #jortage is a really good solution for that use case.
@referik checkout #jortage (https://jortage.com), use less relays or enable cleanups for cached media.
Duplication of data is not only happening with images/media/caches but also with the text/toots.
This is by design in a de-centralized environment.
For those who do not want / can not (like smaller instances) participate, #jortage is perfect concept.
@poag it's a good question, and I honestly don't know the underlying reason why. However, I did run across #jortage yesterday which is trying to solve essentially that problem: https://jortage.com/
@gock @abnv Another option: https://jortage.com/ #mastoadmin #jortage - not very in the spirit of "decentral" but maybe worthy for smaller / single instances.
https://jortage.com/ takes the "duplicate every image across every fedi server" model and deduplicates as possible at the media storage level
self-hosting an instance and outsourcing media storage has been for me a nice balance
i just upped my contribution a bit
thought you should all know about #jortage
@woozle Gah!!!
This one's my fault.
I just checked my uMatrix settings. I hadn't permitted "media" for "jortage.com".
Toggled that, saved the config. All's now good.
If anyone else runs into this issue, point them to this thread.
@woozle NB: All images appear broken on toot.cat for now.
That includes avatars (which I'd first noticed), and now uploads.
I'm presuming that there's something b0rken with jorts.com configs?
(I do see, via the Firefox uMatrix extention, that I'm supposedly communicating with jorts.com / pool.jorts.com.
FF DevTools Network states: "NS_ERROR_INTERCEPTION_FAILED" under the "Transferred" column. For, e.g.,
