Gonna have to read some sicko horror short stories while I'm trudging through #Noli by #JoseRizal
The prose ain't doing shit for me.
I'm halfway through the book. It's taking a while to read because it's fairly dry social commentary and I don't find Rizal's use of language compelling. TBH I'd drop it if I weren't Filipino lol. #JoseRizal #Noli
@bookstodon A fascinating article by Gina Apostol, about the influence Jose Rizal, the Philippines' national hero, exerts on our culture and, therefore, on our literature - especially those from the capital. I can't really speak for those from the provinces, whose view on Rizal's influence on literature and culture may not be quite as overwhelming or even positive.

Slowly making my way through #JoseRizal 's Noli Me Tangere.
Not really a spoiler but that chapter where Ibarra visits the cemetery & finds out that Father Damaso ordered gravediggers to throw his dad's body out.
The gravedigger, instead of burying the body with the "heathen Chinese", decides to THROW IT INTO THE RIVER.
That scene hurt me so much on so many levels. As a #Filipino who observes undas/day of the dead/all saints and as a Filipino with Chinese heritage. Good fucking god. #books
I know that there's a trending show called Maria Clara at Ibarra where a Gen Z girl is isekai-ed into the book, but I didn't want to watch it and spoil my experience of the original. Questionable Wattpad remakes can be explored later depending on how much I want to poison my brain. #JoseRizal #isekai
This balikbayan's first attempt at reading Noli Me Tangere by #JoseRizal. It's a 1887 novel originally in #Spanish and immensely influential in Asia's first national independence movement in the #Philippines
I studied in Canada so the #Tagalog version wasn't forced on me, so I'm reading it in English because I'd think that the translation is closer to the original Spanish! Rizal was a Dumas fanboy so I'm expecting Count of Monte Cristo but make it colonial period Philippines #books #bookstodon

It's #RizalDay in the Philippines. Dr. Jose Rizal's books sparked the revolution against Spain.
24 years ago, I adapted his book NOLI ME TANGRE as stage play at SDSU. The first play I'd ever written.
Now, the starship in my retro sci-fi pilot is named after him. #JoseRizal
Today in Labor History December 30, 1896: Filipino patriot and reform advocate José Rizal was executed by a Spanish firing squad in Manila for rebellion during the Philippine Revolution. However, he was not actively involved in the planning or fighting. He was an ophthalmologist by profession, and a writer and a key member of the Filipino Propaganda Movement, which advocated for political reforms for the colony under Spain. The American Governor General William Howard Taft suggested making Rizal a national hero since he was dead and because he had been non-violent, qualities which didn’t threaten American rule or change the status quo.
