Julian Gough, who wrote the End Poem for Minecraft, says he owns the words because he refused to sign a contract.

Hmm.

This was by his own account work-for-hire and though he'd met the Minecraft creator Markus once he wasn't, despite the headline, his "friend".

He was paid $20,000, a lot for 9 pages regardless of the later billion dollar sale to Microsoft.

IANAL, but if this ends up in court I don't think he'll win.

I don't think Julian Gough is on this site yet but I recommend reading his The Egg and the Rock blog on the origins of the universe and the findings from the James Webb telescope. He made some pretty wild predictions a few months back which have turned out to be correct and suggest an entirely different and exciting way of looking at the cosmos.
