Julius Lester was born the son of a black Methodist minister in the south. His book Lovesong is a beautifully written account of his spiritual journey away from the conventions of his Southern heritage and Methodist upbringing, culminating in his personal self-discovery through a conversion to Judaism.

From time to time, I would sit in on Prof. Julius Lester's classes at UMASS, literally on the floor, to hear him lecture. My mom was a reading teacher and loved his books. One year I asked him if he would please sign some books of his for a gift for my mother. He did. She loved the gift.

It has been 12 years since she died. Five for him.

I remembered him and that story this morning because a friend shared an essay he wrote on fb.
