Showed up for the second day to start the trial and ... immediate mistrial. Apparently the defendant stepped outside yesterday, was overcome by the heat, and went to the hospital. They'll be all right, but are in no shape for a trial. They'll find a new jury when they reschedule. #JuryDuty

Tidbits from #JuryDuty orientation:

You can use the bathroom even during the orientation. You won't miss anything because there are speakers in there.

You can get a letter verifying your service for your employer or *spouse*. "Jury duty my ass, Harold, you were out with that floozy again!"

Apparently there's a problem with jurors telling the judge (of whom they're afraid), "Yes, I can serve that long," then coming back to the waiting room and stage-whispering to a clerk, "not really".

The coffee shop in the courthouse is called "Starting Grounds". I'm Not a Lawyer[tm], but I think a better name would be "Grounds for Dismissal". #JuryDuty

The second time I was called the court convened in the jury assembly room. The judge said that whilst this was unusual, they needed a large jury pool because it was a capital case.

The quiet got quiet.

The judge asked that if anyone wanted to be excused to go to left side of the room (or the right —I forget which).

It was like the parting of the Red Sea.

I'm philosophically opposed to the death penalty, and at the time was severely deaf, so I was excused.

A friend got her summons which which have grabbed her during finals week. Not only that, it was sent to her previous address. She had to get an affidavit from her previous landlord to be excused.

The first I was called was decades ago. 'Twas an indecent exposure case. All of the women who were middle-aged or older were asked if they had received a Catholic education, and all of the men is they had ever urinated outdoors. A psychologist averred that he could not given his expertise judge strictly on the evidence as presented as was dismissed. They filled their quota before they got to me, much to my disappointment.
