This particular mimic species has a rather unique origin. As polyps the first batch was caught in a giant spider's web soon after being spawned. Rather than being devoured by the arachnid, they turned into sticky strands amid the webwork. Not long after that, a group of adventurers slew said spider and moved on. The mimics had something to subsist on and kept their disguise to keep more bugs...

What happens when a mimic gets dumped into a bag of holding? Well, it stops pretending to be whatever it was and starts to chew its way out. Not all of them, of course. Most go into stasis and those that awake often suffocate. But every once in a while, one digests the magic holding it. Thus, a knapping mimic is born. Now, it finds itself dragged all across the world with creatures that love to cause carnage.

Sometimes a mimic polyp strikes the motherload! Such a fate befell the first Wain Mimic. Taken in by kindly halflings, the mimic was fed as often as well, the halflings fed themselves. Infected with their good demeanor and too many calories, it rapidly grew in size and now serves as a mobile kitchen.
.
A sinister version exists as well, tied to kobolds instead of halflings in the link below.

Hand-crafted by an aberrant soul, the first mimic of this breed was given to the creature's loyal bodyguard to provide both protection... and a second bodyguard as it were. The monstrosity performed exceptionally well, especially when heroes slew the fellow wearing it and the mimic kept the bottom fighting. Thus the cuirassier mimic was passed to the next right-hand-mook, and so on as its bearers passed.

Each and every one an annoying little blighter, these tiny mimics band together for mutual protection and hunting purposes. Bred either by goblins or gnomes, depending on who tells the tale, these wretched swarms were left as deadly gifts on doorsteps. Their appealing, if false, nature, lead the unwary to reach into a gaggle of tiny mimics, and well, they feasted.

Cherished by a long line of barbarian chieftains before the tribe was extinguished, the mauling mimic's origins remain shrouded in myth. The tribe's tale states that their first chieftain pulled this weapon from the blood of a primordial demon they slew, yet, all the monstrosity's descendants are clearly specialized mimics. Either way, skulls are going to get crushed.

Stranded in a desert after consuming the caravan that was carting it, the first of this mimic breed wasn't sure how to survive. It only knew it was sick of starving and helplessly salivated at the thought of food. Then it noticed, creatures strayed to any body of water to drink so it did what its kind does best, adapted.

Raised by a vengeful noble, the cask mimic was first trained to protect the man's most precious vintages and to keep his favorite foods fresh far longer than they should. Then, one day the noble had it devour an unfaithful spouse and hide the body from the authorities. Over time, only the bones remained within the monstrosity's mass. The fickle blueblood decided to scold and beat their pet one day and...

This particular strain of mimics was carefully cultivated into being by a drow matron sick of uninvited guests - both of the adventurer and political rival variety. Resistant to pesky bypassing magic and capable of alerting a building's occupants (and other mimics) of interlopers, entry mimics became all the rage... well, until they started eating honored guests and the occasional house pet.

No one is quite sure how long the throne has been a mimic, certainly dating back to the mythic age. The ultimate arbiter of a ruler's acumen, this monstrosity has devoured many a pretender, honored few usurpers, and empowered many a questing knight. Let us not speak of its siblings playing host to orc warlords, ancient undead, or sinister devils.

To put it simply, this mimic likes pain. It started out in a dungeon as a scourge but it didn't produce enough. The sadistic creature changed into a rack but after a while left unsatisfied. When it took the shape of an iron maiden, oh, its dreams came true. The way its victims writhed as it ate it, the screams they made it could soon imitate! It was the perfect meal.

A lover of pomp and circumstance, this mimic is also a finicky eater. If prefers meals spiced with noble or martial blood and thus set itself up as a habitation fit for such creatures. That's not to say that it won't eat commoners if needed, but it prefers not to. Along the way, it noticed that its preferred prey carried all sorts of items that really hurt, so ...

Why do wild mages always have the worst ideas? The first mimic of this sort came from such a spell-caster who charmed a mimic, twisted it to a staff, and imbued it with chaotic power until it became magical in its own right. The mage though it focused the surge into just duplicating spells, but the mimic was feeding off of him...

A lover and animals but a glutton nevertheless, this mimic takes the form of a common farming implement one finds attached to beasts. Once lashed to a beast, the monstrosity takes over its mind and uses the creature to get about as well as transforms it into a hunting partner. Many a farmer has been trampled by their own horse and then 'raked' into giblets by the terror attached.

Reared by a druidic blood-cult, this monstrosity grows to towering heights. It serves both as a festive centerpiece and a sacrificial altar. In one instance, the willing dance about the mimic in its pole form imbuing it with mystic potential during their rite. On the other, it flings its prey about. Once the poor souls are tenderized, it devours them in a frenzy of gore.

A collection of stunted polyps, the caltrop mimic swarm struggled to bring prey down. That was, until, it ran across a collection of caltrops spread on the ground and more importantly the adventurer hobbled by it. It's not always the evil and made who breed variations of mimics. The first marquee mimic was lovingly raised by a shopkeep sick of thieves stealing in the dead of night. Needless to say, he had some cleaning up to do on the sidewalk in the morning, but that was a price he was willing to pay. By the time the theives guild came knocking in numbers, the mimic had spawned. Crime statistics quickly plummeted.

Enchanted by the unique melodies produced by a piper, the first of these mimics got rid of the actual instrument and took its place. It was a bit difficult at first because the piper realized that there was something off about their instrument. However, it could produce sounds others of its ilk could not. Likewise, it granted the player unassailable courage while driving others to dread at the same time.

The first one of these terrors started off as the runt polyp of its liter. Taken in by a deranged soul, it aided in a string of brutal murders. Though, it only saw its wielder as a protector and true friend. When its 'friend' was finally slain, the mimic wisely laid inert. It worked its way into a cook's panoply and slowly by giving visions of the woman giving into her resentment and rage...
