Today marks the 15th anniversary of the police killing of Fredy Villanueva in Montréal-Nord. RIP Fredy, and continued condolences and respect to his family, extended family, and movements that have organized resiliently for more than one decade against police impunity and racism. The impact of those local movements resonate today.

Today's anniversary is particularly sad because it exposes police and settler racism and violence against young Indigenous, Black and Latino lives more generally. On this day in 2016, Colten Boushie, 22, a member of the Cree Red Pheasant First Nation, was murdered by a settler on a farm in rural Saskatchewan. On this day in 2014, Michael Brown, 18, was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. And, on this day in 2008, Fredy Villanueva, 18, was shot and killed by a police officer in Montréal-Nord. In all cases, no one was ever convicted for the murders (and in the case of Brown and Villanueva, the murdering police officers were not even charged). Today we remember these lives, and many more, as we continue to fight against colonialism, racism and police violence.
