Excellent news: Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed New Mexico's "Second Chance" bill into law last night, prohibiting life sentences without a possibility of parole for people convicted as juveniles. #nmleg

It allows them, after serving required lengths of time based on their convictions, the right to make a case for parole. An important step for sentencing reform.

I was particularly annoyed to see a prominent #NewMexico newspaper mention the Morrison case and incorrectly describe her case as “a felony charge of murder,” which is not what “felony murder” is. It’s a simple error but we’re supposed to get these things right (#journalism) and when I pointed out the mistake via friendly backchannel they ignored it. This doesn’t help and indeed further obscures the problem. #juvenilejustice #criminaljustice

Today the NM legislature passed a bill prohibiting life without the possibility of parole for children. #nmleg

One thing unaddressed by most of the coverage is that some are sentenced for “felony murder” because someone died during the course of a different felony. I wrote about such case last year.
