: What is digital inclusion? Digital inclusion is having equitable, meaningful, and safe access to the use, lead, and design of digital technologies, services, and associated opportunities for everyone. At T-ATP, we’re committed to ensuring everyone, especially #k12 students, has access to the digital and cyber world. #educationpolicy #education #educationleadership #cybersecurity #nonprofit #nced #ncpol #digitalequity #educationequity #techforgood #edtech

Before I forget - what is the situation for #JSOL in Japan these days?
JSOL = Japanese for Speakers of Other Languages. I'm not sure what they really call it in Japan.
When I was there, non-Japanese speaking elementary students all had one class once a month at an elementary school - not their home school, necessarily.
Surely the situation has to be better than that by now?
Don't remember if I mentioned this here, but I (finally??) came up with a good response to HS students "I have to take this call. It's an emergency" in the middle of class.
I tell them "of course, if it is an emergency, you need to take it. I care about you, so I'll call home later today to check that everything is okay."
"I care about you" is phrased as appropriate for our relationship and the age of the student.
Ofc, since I came up with this, I have not had to use it.
: What is digital literacy? Digital literacy uses technology to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information. How does #cyber fit into digital literacy? In an ever-increasing digital world, one must be knowledgeable and safe with online actions. At T-ATP, we’re teaching #k12 students just that - to be safe online along with being cyber leaders. #educationpolicy #education #educationleadership #cybersecurity #nonprofit #nced #ncpol #digitalequity #educationequity #techforgood #edtech

Check out Wes Hall's aDOORable space outside his classroom.

1776 Curriculum is the “#herpes of history”…
& like tVD…It’s painful, contagious, can be a life-long disability &…
There’s no cure.
Like the stupidity to call #propaganda …#history.
“A controversial #k12 course of study developed by #hillsdalecollege
a private #christian institution that promotes #rightwing ideologies.”

I might be mistaken, but I feel like it adds another layer of lock-in as well. Now, not only can the file format be proprietary, but the use is linked entirely to the web site as well.
Google Drive is good about making downloads in several *usable* formats.
Canva (for example) much less so. PressBooks (for "open content" books) even less so, imo.
Local software and local data.
If only #k12 educators would understand this.
Anyone have experience with https://freesubtitles.ai?
I just discovered it, and it seems like something that I, as an ESOL teacher, could get a lot of use out of, even just for the subtitles. But, it also says it can translate subtitles - and the first language is *free*.
Many sites that translate subtitles cost a lot of money & require monthly / yearly subscriptions.
Thanks for any info. I'll try it ofc, but other's insights are appreciated.

I created a free #K12 interactive #science quiz for #students to discover which Order a Mammal belongs to. If you'd like to beta test it and let me know if you find glitches, I'd appreciate it. I've stared at the screen for too long and am no longer seeing the branching questions objectively. The plugin limits me to a max of 25 categories, so I had to get creative. TIA for the feedback.

5. These services will likely save a lot of teachers a lot of time.
6. They *might* result in some improvement in learning outcomes for students.
If I were starting a PhD program today, I would research number 6.

3. Those companies are all probably using #ChatGPT or similar on the back end to generate the content. Their added value is turning the generated content into documents, slides, polls, etc.
4. Yes, at the moment a lot of content is not great. Factual content cannot be trusted. Narrative content is often bland / generic / boring.
But, it should be safe to assume the generated content will get better.

I am NOT an AI expert, so of course I have some opinions ...
1. #ChatGPT and similar Large Language Models are NOT AGI (artificial general intelligence). Not even close.
2. The ARE content creation tools. To the extent that you need to create content, they can be useful. Many companies now offer content creation services to #K12 educators. The list includes, but is not limited to, lesson plans; class slides; assessments; summaries; and modified and translated readings.

My employer just posted our new students rights hub.
"Every student has the right to learn in an environment where they feel valued and can think for themselves. This fundamental promise of our democracy is under attack in #Indiana...
So sharpen your pencils and get ready to take some notes! Knowing your rights is essential to protecting them. "

Productive and educational (no pun intended) week. Completed a lot of prep for the new #k12 school year. Have more new (to our school) #EnglishLearners than I expected, so that's great news.
As always, looking forward to #AdultESL this weekend. Prepping for that now, then going to play some old-school #Quake3.

Beginning of the school year. So, open houses (so 12+ hour work days) at two schools this week, another next week, and another the week after. #k12 start of the year is so much fun.
Good news is that we have lots of new #EnglishLearners at the schools this year, so I will have a lot of great students to work with.

I should probably clarify:
This means whatever the teaching standards are —— like IIUC #Florida has not *YET* approved #prageru full-throttle.
It also doesn’t mean (??) that new teachers won’t have to comply with the standards in their new state.
But it does mean,
they won’t have to
- retrain
- recertify
.
And the implications of that… are not great.
If #k12 teachers
do not have to retrain,
then what?
OR, CA & every member going to audit every single class,
every year
?
=expensive taxes
HEADS-UP:
#Oregon * now allow #k12 #teachers who habitually used #PragerU material,
w/o retraining
to teach our classrooms.
(see graph)
*from any state in newly-joined 10-state "teachers compact" to NOT_NEED_TO_RETRAIN nor recertify
upon moving states,
to
jumpstart teaching
Implications still being researched.

Little did I know when I wrote that toot, that (approximately) hundreds of #AI #EdTech startups were already in the works. Seems like every day I hear about 2 or 3 more companies that use AI to help with some aspect of teacher prep and teaching.
Honestly, it is a bit overwhelming. I feel like I need to try many of them and see which fits my needs best. But, not enough time in the day!
Adult #ESOL class started today. As usual, I have a great group of students in class. Looking forward to working with them for the next 2 months.
I "work" 7 days a week (#k12 Mon to Fri, adults on weekend), but teaching ESOL doesn't feel like work when it is what you want to do anyhow.
In related news, debating if I should renew #Gimkit for another year or not. Don't use it that much, but when I do, it is well received.
