Just watched the drama of Tamoe, and after watching with its opulent colours and action and larger than life characters, watching the glacial paced, ritualistic minimalism of Noh is like a whole other world. Like a glass of cold water after a very rich meal.

Very beautiful and stylised. The skill of the actors and singers is amazing.

Another detail from the kosode. were already auspicious symbols in arts, but “when actor Ichikawa Danjüro VII used bat motifs in his costumes, the perception of these animals as a chic design element spread rapidly throughout in the 19th century.”

I went to kabuki for the first time last night and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Two short plays: a dark tragic tale and a light comedy, titled The Skull Nun and Love Letters from the Pleasure Quarters. Guess which was the comedy.
I understand very little Japanese and even less about kabuki. But I know a little about theater, and this was great theater. Costumes, set, staging, dancing, music were all wonderful. The main actor in the comedy was excellent.
