So many features Twitter claims to want to add already exist in #KakaoTalk in Korea. It's central to Korean communications online. Something like 96% of people in Korea use it by default, and when it went down once for 12 hours due to a fire in their IT center, so many things failed to work it was a national scandal.

You can't have the reputation of unreliability and haphazard decision-making of #Twitter and grow to be something people trust to that degree.

Looking for updates on the data center fire in Korea, back at the end of October. Didn't find any, but I did find a bit more information. Seems Kakao did not do enough backup planning, most of the resources were there, with no full backup site. Naver had some units housed there as well, but they had what appears to be a far better recovery plan.

Also, making me think about the time a certain corporate data system decided to test it's systems, hired a group to do so, and they didn't put the system in a test mode, so when they hit the gas dispersal switch the FM200 was dispensed and power shut down as if there had been an urgent fire related situation. That was not fun restoring.
