Sad to report that juvenile #kakapo Xenicus (1.5 years old) has been found dead on Anchor Island, apparently having been hit by a falling tree. Animals have accidents too. There are now 247 kākāpō left alive. #conservation #parrots Pic: Petrus Hedman.

This transfer was undertaken in partnership with Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Manuhiri Settlement Trust. Members from both iwi escorted the #kakapo to a Fiordland island for quarantine. We’ll remove the remaining 6 kākāpō from Hauturu in future years. #conservation 📸D. Vercoe

Since 2012 we’ve been trialling #kakapo on Hauturu-o-Toi. We’ve now concluded that they can live there, but are unlikely to breed without supplementary food. So we recently moved four females off the island to rejoin the southern breeding population. #conservation 📸 D. Vercoe

This is excellent news! I have worked a little with #kakapo and they are absolutely delightful #birds, as well as one of the most critically #endangered birds on the planet. Largest parrot on the planet, flightless, and nocturnal; a true oddity.
