I did Remember the Kanji with story help from https://kanji.koohii.com/ and a trimmed deck from https://japaneselevelup.com/japanese-level-up-rtk-mod-anki-deck/

While it might not be the most efficient (knowing #kanji meanings != reading #Japanese) and I definitely can't write most kanji from memory, I found it useful because it gave me a structure for decomposing and distinguishing kanji, made them familiar/less scary, and I can now easily write a kanji I'm looking at well enough that an OCR can parse it.

I personally tested both Remembering the Kanji and WaniKani. I prefer the latter over the former. However, I might consider trying the Kodansha book. I like the idea to do a SRS with actual stories (and not Anki).

INTRO:

I know that there are lots of other online resources for showing the stroke order of sinograms. Some of them are more useful than others. Most (probaly all) of them are incomplete with regard differences in stroke order according to region and writing style. Additionally, they explain often a rather limited number of sinograms.

KanjiStrokeOrders has the first two limitations as well (and might be less well maintained) but it does explain many more graphs (I counted 6612). I also happen to like the minimalist black and white single image with numbers style. If you know of a better resource, please let me know.

for later examination: is 木桩 (stump, syn: 切り株) a legit #Japanese word? jisho.org doesn't know the #kanji 桩. When I search google for "桩 kanji" it shows me results for 桩 AND 樁, both highlighted. Is the former the simplified Chinese version of the latter? are Japanese people using this character in daily contexts?

Can anyone point me to a how-to book that teaches illustration in the style of Sword Art Online. It has to be a physical book as it will be a gift to an incarcerated person. Also, if anyone knows of a soft cover short story written in English and kanji or even just kanji that can be shipped from and to the us, that would be helpful too. Thanks in advance.

When you learn Japanese you see a lot of cryptic Kanji. Now in general, imho, the feeling of the strokes is mostly very similar across the field (not a Kanji expert by any means). But my two favorite combined Kanji are these two: 凸凹 (read as dekoboko). Firstly, you can immediately decipher the meaning: 凸 (convex) + 凹 (concave) = uneven. Secondly, they FEEL completely different from other Kanji to me. They are just a shape! Such a fun word! #japanese #LanguageLearning #kanji

in case you are up to learn traditional/ simplified #chinese writing (or #kanji):

don't be afraid of stroke order. it is your friend! you can learn how to read and write this script(s) without knowing how to pronounce it.
in fact i wish someone had broken in to my house and forced me to use stroke input methods and stuff two years ago, when i was like "huh. mandarin is super simple actually. i will ignore writing for now. pinyin ftw!"

it is not rocket science. kids in school learn that stuff.
