OK, so, look...
The police raid of the #MarionCountyRecord was absolutely outrageous and a clear overreach.
At the same time, it seems just as clear that the reporter, #PhyllisZorn,, who downloaded #KariNewell's driving record broke the law in doing so.
"I needed to corroborate the information a source gave me" is not actually a legitimate justification for breaking the law.
The Record should fire Zorn and anyone who knew about and approved her actions.

Police action definitely guarantees that no one will ever hear about #KariNewell DUI conviction or the police chief's sexual misconduct:
Very intelligent action taken by sheriff to safeguard data privacy.
Really good interview with Eric Meyer, publisher of the Marion County Record from the Handbasket blog.
"So the backstory that we haven't told, because we don't wanna get in trouble, is that we've been investigating the police chief [Gideon Cody]. When he was named Chief just two months ago, we got an outpouring of calls from his former co-workers making a wide array of allegations against him saying that he was about to be demoted at his previous job and that he retired to avoid demotion and punishment over sexual misconduct charges and other things.”

Seems the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (Kansas state police) were also involved in the raid on the Marion County Record, owner, and employees.
"Marion police had coordinated with the KBI earlier in the week to launch the investigation. Though the KBI assigned an agent to the case Aug. 8 that has been 'assisting since that time,' KBI representatives stressed that the KBI agent didn’t apply for the search warrants and was not present when the warrants were served."

Why would the Marion, KS police be willing to go to such lengths over an allegation of “identity theft” by a local restaurant owner? Why not just a subpoena? Maybe this:
"The Record had been actively investigating Police Chief Gideon Cody at the time of the raid after receiving tips that he had left his previous job in Kansas City, Mo., to avoid repercussions for alleged sexual misconduct charges, … Though the paper never ran the information, details about the investigation — including the identities of those who made the allegations against Cody — were in a computer seized by police.”

If you've followed the story of the (probably illegal) small town Kansas police raid on the Marion County Record newspaper it's owner, publisher, and reporters, it gets worse. The 98 year old owner of the paper died yesterday, the day after the raid on her home.

#KariNewell might interested to know this is available to the public, if they allow her a liquor license.
How far back does the background check go anyway?
Seems like a lot of wasted effort if it's only 7-10 years.

“When they came into the establishment, I quietly and politely asked them to exit,” #Newell said. “I didn’t feel that their constituents needed to be exposed to any risk of being misquoted.”
Well, #KariNewell, that is very bad reasoning. We do our own analysis of the media in these parts. If Jake LaTurner's people claim he was misquoted, it's on them to provide accurate quotes within their response(s).
Completely beyond the pale. Kansas Newspapers gets the full-on fascist treatment. #PhyllisZorn #MarionCounty
#KariNewell is a #drunkdriver

I am guessing #KariNewell and the #MarionKSPD are laughing and laughing and laughing...

@rejinl The paper had gotten a tip about the DUI and subsequent driving without a drivers license by Newell, and a salacious personal claim against her, so they were worried it was a set up. Newell attacked the paper on her facebook page and made false accusations against them at a council meeting, this caused the paper to respond that their investigation into her DUI was true and her DUI reporting accurate. They did not investigate or publish anything about the salacious personal accusation. But Newell was up for a liquor license because she failed to do so when she purchased the place in Feb, assuming the transfer of license from previous holder was all she needed, which was incorrect. If she doesn't have a liquor license, her business closes. Usually ABC licensing also do a background check with local police, which may be why the Police Chief is nervous. Lots of questions. Good questions.

Yup. Turn over the corrupt stones and all of the snakes slither out. Judge Laura Viar approved the raid. US Rep Jake LaTurner (R-2nd District) was at the meeting with #KariNewell in her restaurant when she threw the reporters out.
Who is the wealthy powerful Republican connected person who waged a vendetta against a newspaper for truthfully reporting on her DUI, jeopardizing her pending Liquor License applicaton? That resulted in an armed police raid of the newspaper's offices, and the armed police raid of the home of the newspaper's 98 year old co-owner Joyce Meyer and her subsequent death?
Could it be: #KariNewell owner of the very fancy restaurant
ChefsPlateParlour1886.com ?
Newell also owns Kari's Kitchen.
Entire local police department and judge ATTACK Marion County newspaper’s ability to work with an ILLEGAL search and seizure. They may never get their equipment back. This is all thanks to convicted Drunken Driver, restauranteur Kari Newell.

The only question I have about the #MarionKSPolice is did they confiscate the newspaper's computers/phones to plant evidence, or to delete the evidence they were trying to set them up?
It'd be great if we knew everything about #KariNewell! https://kansasreflector.com/2023/08/11/police-stage-chilling-raid-on-marion-county-newspaper-seizing-computers-records-and-cellphones/
