Soo.. less than 6 days before starting a 4 week trip to Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Serbia for my beloved Karst mountains and its oso blue waters.
There are going to be lots of spomenici too of course.
Only using public transport and my own two feet, possibly rented bikes or hitch-hiking, so like every year, it's going to be "go with the flow".. will there be a bus?

But first very curious about that new night train!

Back from at Sunken Lake Park in Alpena County. Spent one day at State Rec Area picking in the quarry and hiking to the sinkhole. Then another day doing trail maintenance & improvement at Thunder Bay Preserve. Final day at Rogers City "Nautical City" Festival, Little Ocqueoc underground river, and Falls.

Each of these images tells part of the geological story of this cave. We would predict that some of these stories would also work for , too.

Overall, the Coldwater Cave trip massively exceeded my hopes. From all the images we collected, we could put together a cohesive story of cave formation. Even just a few images can get a lot of the story right.

In the past, hazard reduction or prescribed burns (fires) were not allowed in New South Wales on karst reserves. That was in case there was an unexpected impact on caves or groundwater.

Between 2015 and 2018 we had funding to provide the evidence base - should prescribed burns occur? The strong evidence from a team of earth scientists and plant ecologists was yes. Prescribed burns would have negligable effects compared to wildfire, and in many sites, the vegetation need a fire to encourage reseeding.

Borenore Karst Conservation Reserve was one of our experimental sites, and I revisited it yesterday, looking great five years post-fire.

My colleague Helen Rutlidge (UNSW) has a new available for feedback and comments.

The title is "Negative Indian Ocean Dipole drives groundwater recharge in southeast Australia".

The identifies recharge events using observed changes in water level in bores (wells) and observations of water moving through adjacent towards the water table.

These are compared to climate data from 2012 to 2021, all for the central west region of New South Wales, Australia. The data shows that the most significant recharge event during a decade of observations occurred during a particularly strong negative Indian Ocean Dipole period.

Through further analysis of recharge events dating back 1900, the authors show for the first time a significant link with negative Indian Ocean Dipole events.

Had a good volunteer work day with the Michigan Conservancy. Spread some gravel and trimmed branches at Stevens Twin Sinks, walked around Bruski Sink and confirmed that the new fence was not torn down yet, and trimmed more branches at Mystery Valley. Wife came along, I'm a lucky guy.

Two days of cave research in and around Mt Etna Nation Park, Queensland, Australia reminded me that native fig trees have root systems that go deep underground to access groundwater. And that land surface models don't do a good job of our deep rooting native trees.
