I on the other hand took pains to explain the history of fascism, communism, and authoritarianism of the previous century to my kids so they could understand exactly what was happening to the soldier getting stabbed, and why the woman was holding a dead child on the plaque under him.

If you don’t know the story, in 1940 the Soviets murdered twenty thousand Polish officers and buried them in mass graves in western Russia.

The twist tho. For decades the Soviets claimed it was the Nazis who carried out the atrocity. It wasn’t till Gorbachev revealed the truth that we all realized that Khrushchev was not joking when he denounced Stalin, and when a million western leftists’ minds exploded as they sought to reconcile this murderous cognitive dissonance.

The worst twist tho. After decades of being open about the history of the massacre, the Putin regime has returned to claiming the murder was carried out by Nazis 🤦 (this point used to be made prominently on Wikipedia but has since disappeared, though the source they cite for the downgrading of the memorial still says this). #Katyn
