It was in a Kauri forest near Dargaville, NZ, that I had a... communication with one of them trees.
It was in May 2012 and I wasn't climate-aware yet.
I touched its bark for a while. Then I asked it to tell me how it is to stay at one place for a thousand years. When no answer came, I told it how it is to move around, to see different things every moment, to move the legs, to sit on a train and look out the window at the landscape rushing by etc. I told it in thought images. Not in words.
I kept my hand on its bark a while longer.
Then I realised I had to pee somewhat urgent and turned away to walk back to the parking lot.
After 10 steps or so, I noticed how my legs became heavier and heavier. I could hardly move them at all, anymore. It felt like something was holding me back, psychologically. I kept walking. Very slowly. And a bit scared because I didn't know what was happening and I was alone in the forest and had to pee and...
Then I thought, maybe the crazy thing happened and the tree is speaking to me in such a way that it shows me how it is when you can't move...
I'm not an esoteric or a Harry-Potter-type of person. I'm an IT professional, for god's sake.
But I stopped walking. I turned around to face the tree again. And in my mind, I thanked it for the insight, and asked it to please let me go now. Because I'm a thing that has to move and can't stay in one place for a thousand years.
Turning around, walking a few more steps: still heavy and difficult. A few more steps... then it got easier.
And after yet more steps, it was normal again.

@timsmalley old trees and ancient forest deserve protection. In New Zealand we have many notable ancients, but we need to do better #TaneMahuta #Kauri #Rata #oldtrees #forests

@bevan and a great segue into their films. Out of interest, did this model come about after they did Avatar? The tie-ins and story behind the #Kauri and the features of the film are very strong. I wonder if you could help the cause on the back of the forthcoming sequel? #WetaFX #Weta #WetaDigital #Avatar ##waikato

This scale 1:82 model of a kauri tree was built by Wētā Workshop for Waikato Regional Council to help spread the message about protecting kauri.
#Kauri are affected by the disease 'kauri dieback' caused by the fungus-like organism #Phytophthora agathidicida (that I described in 2015) .
The roots of the trees are infected by this #PlantPathogen, so it is important to not disturb the roots or move any soil into their zone. This model helps illustrate the extent of the root zone.
