An aerial view of our excavations at a 16th century Wendat-Anishnaabe village in the Kawartha Lakes, north of Toronto. Taken in 1977, as we finished up after one-and-a-half seasons of work. Outlines of some of the 20+ longhouses we discovered are visible as narrow trenches we excavated to trace their walls (visible as rows of dark post stains in the sand).

Human face effigy bone bead, Huron-Wendat late 16th C. Has a carved face on two opposite sides. Made from the long bone of a very small mammal. Excavated from the site of a small agricultural hamlet in the Karwartha Lakes, N of Toronto. 1976.

European iron awl, set in a white-tail-deer antler handle. From a 16th-century /Wendat village site in the , , . The awl may be one of dozens that Jacques Cartier gave away when he visited the St. Lawrence valley in 1534.
