An aerial view of our excavations at a 16th century Wendat-Anishnaabe village in the Kawartha Lakes, north of Toronto. Taken in 1977, as we finished up after one-and-a-half seasons of work. Outlines of some of the 20+ longhouses we discovered are visible as narrow trenches we excavated to trace their walls (visible as rows of dark post stains in the sand).

European iron awl, set in a white-tail-deer antler handle. From a 16th-century #Huron/Wendat village site in the #KawarthaLakes, #Ontario, #Canada. The awl may be one of dozens that Jacques Cartier gave away when he visited the St. Lawrence valley in 1534.
