Last night’s nightmare (maybe too strong a word): ordered laptop for co-worker, but a huge box showed up inside in was a #Kaypro or #Compaq #luggable, apparently with no packing material and no keyboard. It also seemed to be powered on for no reason (I could see a glowing amber screen). I tried to refuse delivery but the carrier wouldn’t let me.

@yesterbits I feel my love for the #Kaypro II is being tested ... what a nice and compact machine! One has to love it!!

The first computer I’ve ever used, sometime in 1986. The Kaypro 2x 64k Z80 CP/M “luggable” has been in our family for over 35 years and it still works! Even for 1985 it was a simple computer with almost no graphics capability, but it came with a lot of software: WordStar, Supercalc and DBase and several BASIC variants. And also a few ASCII games like Ladder, a Donkey Kong clone and CatChum, the CP/M version of PacMan! #retrocomputing #vintage #vintagecomputer #kaypro #8bit #cpm

I was in San Francisco. John and Paul Friedlander shared an office in Palo Alto in the same building as Living Videotext, home of (drumroll here) Dave Winer and his brother Peter (aka Boozer). Their outliner was called ThinkTank. Their second product, aptly named More, had my name and “address” on its slipcase. How I got to Byte after being corporate communications director at #Kaypro is a longer demented story for another time. :)

They called it portable, but man it was a beast!
