My wife started hers about the same time. My daughter started hers when she was 12.

I had friends who I ate lunch with in high school from 10th to 12th grade who included me in their circle of girl talk and it's from them that I learned a LOT of what a girl and woman goes through or can go through (one had TERRIBLE endometriosis) during their period. So when girls talk about their period, I'm convinced it is invaluable to them and others.
