One of the best artists of this century:
An elegiac tribute to victims of racial violence, the exhibition serves as a reminder that for each Black life lost, there is a family in mourning. The commanding presence of the individual paintings and sculptures serves almost as a physical manifestation of grief.

I’m very much looking forward to visiting the de Young to see this important Kehinde Wiley show.

You may be familiar with his work only via his fantastic official portrait of Obama for the National Portrait Gallery, but this body of work speaks directly to systemic violence against Black people in the United States, using powerful references to classical art in a modern setting.

“Wiley made the pieces, an extension of his body of work called “Down,” in the months following the 2020 killing of George Floyd while in police custody. ... Just eight models were used for the more than two dozen pieces, building a sense of familiarity for visitors as they pass through the exhibition. When the pieces were shown at the Venice Biennale, some attendees wept and reached out to touch the hands of the sculptures.”

Gift link to article below, which also talks about how museums are handling exhibitions that may be painful viewing for audiences.

This is quite possibly one of the most stunning portraits I’ve ever seen. By chance we arrived at the National Portrait Gallery just as it opened and we made a bee-line to go see it before the crowds made their way towards that gallery.

The story of artist Kehinde Wiley, who painted the Obama portrait and has a thriving art studio churning out paintings of black people in classical settings.
