The have been countless post-mortems of the first test flight of the #Starship / #SuperHeavy a month ago from independent observers of the dramatic minutes on YouTube - today's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9-P-rgMMsI is particularly interesting as it explains a lot of the classical physics involved ... demonstrated with #Kerbal animations.

Downloaded the tutorial #rocket. The final rocket won't fire!

These bugs(?) are rapidly making me lose my enthusiasm for #ksp as a game or educational platform.

I did it again somehow! Everything was right and staged correctly but when I staged it the decoupler disappeared and the engine stayed! Bug?

Imma have to quadruple check the staging on the launch pad live or something.

Got to the #Mun and back again. Again the #rocket wouldn't stage. I did manage to wiggle around in the atmosphere enough so it exploded behind me

But I also didn't lose enough velocity and just heated up in the atmosphere before heading back out to 2 million meters. (Shoulda gone around again!)

At least I get why the rockets aren't staging. No decouplers!

Built the ship. Got to parking #orbit. Transferred to #Munar orbit. Low Munar orbit. Collected science. EVA 8km from Munar surface to get #science out of modules. Back to #Kerbin. 2y journey! 11 million km there and back.

Couldn't seem to stage orbit rocket, so it overheated and exploded 40km from safety.

As it turns out, I'm following the perfect #ksp tutorial for my purposes. He talks about the UI and game elements, but he *also* talks about the #physics and #math of what he's doing. There's even a side series where he derives the #rocket equation, how to calculate Δv, how to do a transfer #orbit, etc.

I think the only thing wrong with using #kerbal to learn this stuff is the relative non-existence of #satellite concepts like station-keeping, conjunctions, etc. #space

Turns out you have to #EVA to collect the #science from the modules before you separate that stage (i.e. while in #orbit).

My first EVA I accidentally got several #rocket lengths separated and thought my pilot was going to burn up in the atmosphere. I somehow got her back aboard and back on the ground.

Harrowing.

It might *look* like I'm #gaming all weekend, but #kerbal #space is actually research for work!

I want to see if I can use it to edutain some of the #software and other #engineer about the domain they are supposedly working in.

Just going to throw this here in case anyone else is struggling to use the #Tsiolkovsky #RocketEquation to find the #mass of #RocketFuel required for a burn where you know Isp, g0, ∆v and m0. Took me may too long to figure this out, but I need it for a #kOS #kerboscript program I'm writing for a #circularization of #orbit script in #kerbalspaceprogram.
