Lots of noise/activity yesterday from our resident American #kestrels. Have never spotted a nest, but suspect one atop the row of spruce trees beside house. I can't tell young from adults but there's at least one newbie, maybe a pair. All seem full size now. Managed to get a couple of pics from long range. #birds

A dream spotting for me as a novice birder, this beautiful American kestrel--I've been longing to see one, and this one appeared on a power line not a block from my home (a surprise catch on my way to pick up my groceries).
A powerhouse the size of a mourning dove, e was floofed up like the fiercest kitten in the raptor family in anticipation of coming rain.

She wriggled against it, tail angling, wings tilting. Kestrels also have the clever trick of allowing their bodies to drift fractionally backwards against the force of the wind, while lengthening their necks to keep their heads still, before flapping again to haul their bodies forward and squash their faces again.

Les presento a Lalo y Lola anidaron dos años en.un arbol de flamboyan en el patio de mi madre, el segundo año fue exitosa, criaron 3 falconcitos dos machos y una hembra, este año su nido fue invadido por abejas y se fueron a otro lugar, el la foto Lola con una iguanita verde.

I visited this undisclosed Kestrel nest site a few times over a period of time in 2019 to see the chicks develop. I had a 150-600mm lens and was a sheer drop between us so can assure everyone we were nowhere near close. Dad was a bit clueless trying to feed a chick his prey whole. Mum wasn't happy and sent him out of the nest in a huff. The bird equivalent of being sent down the pub I suppose.
